New switchboards on older houses, have you had a nice new switchboard installed with the latest in circuit protection then you have made the good choice in not only ease of use but improving safety with the introduction of safety switches. However something is being overlooked by many of the installs we have come across, and it's a real issue, something as a non electrician you cannot see or understand. You may find that you seem to be able to turn on more appliances than before when you had the old rewirable fuse, now the reason for this isn't because you have a new improved switchboard, its because the installer has overated the power point circuits which can become a fire hazard. Basically the wiring can only handle 16 amps of load, the installer has used 20 amp overloads and not 16A as required, we have also seen instances of the light circuit being pushed to 16A when the old cable is good for 8A and pushed to its limits at 10A.
If you had a switchboard replaced recently and the house is pre 90s you can take a photo and text it to 0439821676 and we can advise if an onsite inspection may be required. You are entitled to be safe and get the work that you paid for, the installer also states the work is compliant with AS3000 and relevant acts, therefore they may have to return and remedy at their cost.
